Savings certificates reach a new high after 23 months of growth

The amount invested in savings certificates rose again in August, for the 23rd consecutive month. The year-on-year increase was 15.7%, taking investment to a new all-time high, according to Banco de Portugal.

The sequence of increases shows continued growth in this savings product. The reported figure refers to the amount invested, not the number of subscribers or certificates held.

Savings certificates are one of the options available to savers in Portugal. The latest development provides an indication of demand for this instrument, although it does not replace an assessment of the terms and features applicable to each subscription.

Registered unemployment at job centres falls 9.3% in a year

The number of people registered at job centres fell by 9.3% in August compared with the same month last year. According to the Institute for Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP), there were 273,723 registered unemployed people.

Compared with July, however, the total increased by 1.7%. The two indicators therefore point in different directions: the situation improved compared with August last year, but deteriorated slightly over the course of one month.

Reading the year-on-year and monthly changes together helps put labour market data in context. IEFP figures track people registered with employment services and should not be confused with other statistical measures of unemployment.

EU-issued debt exceeds 5% of the bloc’s GDP

Debt issued by the European Union on behalf of its Member States has almost doubled since 2020 and now exceeds 5% of the bloc’s gross domestic product. The figures are cited by the European Fiscal Board.

Joint issuance allows the Union to raise funding associated with its Member States. The increase recorded since 2020 highlights the growing use of this instrument within the European financial framework.

The share of GDP provides a measure of the scale of the debt relative to the Union’s economy. The report places this issue at the centre of discussions on European public finances and the management of shared commitments.

Report finds gaps in Europe’s coordination against cyberattacks

The European Union’s response to significant cybersecurity incidents is only partially effective, according to the European Court of Auditors. The report identifies difficulties in information sharing and delays in implementing measures.

Sharing data between entities is essential to detecting threats and coordinating responses. According to the assessment, gaps in this process limit the ability to act jointly when significant incidents occur.

The report also notes delays in carrying out planned measures. Its findings put cooperation and timely implementation among the issues to monitor as Europe strengthens digital security.

Collective dismissal notifications rise 13.4% through August

Companies notified 407 collective dismissals through August, according to data from the Directorate-General for Employment and Labour Relations (DGERT). The figure is up 13.4% from the same period last year.

According to the information released, this is the highest figure since 2020. The indicator counts notifications made by companies and helps track the development of collective dismissal procedures in the labour market.

The data do not, by themselves, describe the situation at any individual company or all changes in employment. Even so, the year-on-year comparison offers a relevant signal for monitoring business activity and labour market developments in the coming months.

Euro weakens against the dollar as oil continues to fall

The single currency weakened again and remained around $1.14. The decline came in a session in which oil continued its downward trend.

The exchange rate reflects the value of the euro against the dollar and is closely watched by companies with international operations, investors and travellers. The report links the currency’s movement to the fall in oil prices recorded during the session.

Exchange rate fluctuations can affect the cost of imports and the conversion of revenue earned in other currencies. The $1.14 level serves as a reference point for the session and may change with new economic data and market movements.

Brent falls below $100 despite geopolitical tensions

Brent crude for November delivery fell by almost 4% and began trading below $100 a barrel. The report points to the possibility that this could be the fourth consecutive session of losses.

The decline came despite tensions in the Middle East, a region of importance to the oil market. Price movements show that investors continue to respond to several factors at the same time.

The sequence of declines marks a shift from previous sessions, but does not remove uncertainty about the future direction of crude prices. Prices may remain sensitive to geopolitical news and international market conditions.

Sustainable aviation fuel gains scale across Europe

The supply of sustainable aviation fuel in the European Union almost increased sixfold in 2025, reaching 1.1 million tonnes. This growth demonstrates the rapid expansion in the use of this alternative across European air transport.

The volume supplied exceeded the mandatory 2% target set by European regulations. The result indicates that the sector surpassed the minimum threshold in the first period assessed, although the transition will depend on continued supply and production capacity.

The adoption of these fuels forms part of efforts to reduce aviation’s climate impact. Future developments should be considered in light of European targets, costs for operators and passengers, and the investment required to increase production.

Brent falls more than 3%, closing the session near $100

Brent crude for November delivery ended the session on the London futures market down 3.40%. The price settled at $100.34 a barrel.

The decline represents a significant move in a single session and brings the price back close to the $100 mark. The reported figure relates to the contract for November delivery traded on that market.

The price of Brent is monitored by companies, investors and consumers because of oil’s impact on energy and transport costs. The closing price provides a reference point for the session, but does not, by itself, determine the direction of prices in the days ahead.

Bank of England holds interest rates at 3.75% amid inflationary pressure

The Bank of England decided to keep its main policy rate at 3.75%. The decision maintains the current monetary policy stance at a time when inflation continues to weigh on the British central bank’s decisions.

Uncertainty surrounding energy prices, linked to the situation in the Middle East, was also taken into account. This context makes it more difficult to anticipate cost developments and calls for caution in setting the future course of interest rates.

Holding the rate will be relevant to households, businesses and financial markets in the United Kingdom. Future decisions will depend on the path of inflation and on how external risks affect the British economy.
